School is back in session after a few well-needed weeks off. While school breaks invite students to step back and decompress from homework assignments, projects, and tests galore, they make it a bit more challenging for kids to ease back into their normal routine once the break is over.

How to combat the lull your child faces when going back to school? I spoke with Louisiana teachers and asked for their advice and tips for students starting back to school after a break.

Rest

For kids, having a good night’s rest on a school night and waking up at a reasonable time in the morning is essential. Prepare a few days ahead of time to ensure that your child’s sleep schedule is back on track.

Clean Out Old Work

Ensure your child spends a few minutes going through their backpack, sorting through folders and binders, to decide what they still need and what can be taken out. Then, organize items, including pencils, books, and papers, in order to come back from the break fresh.

Nutritious Breakfast

Eating a good, nutritious breakfast is important for starting the child’s morning off right, not only giving them the energy they need to face the school day but stepping into class each morning with no growling stomachs.

Set a Goal

Whether as a class, at home, or with themselves, a child should set a personalized goal to work towards. This will make staying motivated in class a little easier.

It’s Normal to Feel Down

Remember that it’s okay to feel sad and nervous about going back to school after a break. Teachers understand that it will take time for students to get back in the routine, and it is important for them to remember that, too.

Prepare Your Calendar

Once the teacher gives the student upcoming dates for assignments and tests, use a calendar to write out all of the dates, visualizing their timeline and minimizing any feelings of overwhelm.

Think Positively

Focus on remembering that it will be great to be back with friends and teachers that the child has not seen in a while. Going back to school means they get to catch up with friends and share stories from over the break.
