Summer Classes for Boomers

June 19, 2020

Looking for ways to stay active this summer?

We’ve got 3 classes to consider – all that offer an option to continue practicing social distancing.

New Orleans People Program Virtual Classes

One of the best kept secrets in New Orleans, People Program is a non-profit membership organization for persons 50-years and up who are looking for creative ways to spend leisure time. This summer, the organization is offering 36 different courses virtually via ZOOM.

Summer registration/tuition is based upon the ability to pay; suggested donations are $50/per class or $100/for 2 or more classes.

Registration ends June 30 for summer classes offered from July 6 to August 14. Lesson topics range from “all about wine,” Tai Chi, and French conversation to yoga, ukulele, and trivial pursuits on Wednesday evenings! See their website for full information and course listings.

New Orleans Recreation Department (NORD) Classes

Virtual:

NORD has a full slate of virtual exercise classes offered this summer, Monday through Friday, from June 8 to August 29.  These “live” fitness classes are offered via ZOOM and have free access. Classes include senior dance fitness, yoga, body sculpting, and Zumba.

In-Person:

Want to work out in person, with weights or other equipment? NORD’s seven fitness centers around town are open, but require advance reservations. Also open are three outdoor options: Joe W. Brown Park, Lafitte Greenway/Lehmann Playground, and St. Roch Playground.

More information on virtual and “live” options can be found on the website.

New Orleans Culinary & Hospitality Institute (NOCHI)

With a deep appreciation for food’s cultural and historical context, NOCHI’s mission is to enrich and diversify our city’s centuries-old legacy of hospitality. Their innovative programming this summer (June-July) includes a series of on-line cooking classes hosted by their culinary instructors and guest chefs. Classes feature a mix of pantry-friendly, template-style recipes and New Orleans-inspired dishes, that are easy to follow virtually.

Upon registration, you will receive a confirmation email with basic Zoom instructions. Class themes, menus, and shopping lists are sent out weekly via the Tuesday morning newsletter, and on the day of class, registrants receive a separate email with complete recipes and a Zoom meeting URL/ID (your virtual classroom/supper table).

See their website for all details and dates.
