Safe Summer Camp Checklist

Did you know that many camps are not regulated or inspected?

In Louisiana, a licence is required by the Department of Health and Hospitals to operate a summer day camp, but not all enforce safety policies beyond the basic requirements of the state.

To ensure that your camper has an awesome, but safe, camp experience, here is a handy checklist to ask camp administrators when searching for the right one.

Are there criminal background checks for all staff?

Do all camp counselors and staff have:
            First aid training?
            CPR certification?
            Health and safety training?
            Lifeguard certification?

What is the counselor to camper ratio?

What are your screening and hiring practices? Is a background check required?

What training does the staff receive on safety, supervision, counseling, problem solving, and other issues unique to working with children?

What is the background and experience of the camp director?

Does the camp have:
            A recent fire safety inspection?
            Air conditioning?
            Sun protection?
            Frequent water breaks?

Is the camp accredited by the American Camping Association?

What is your emergency procedure?
