Halloween is officially days away, which means a boo-tiful night filled with candy and costumes for kids, but complete chaos for parents. Prepare your child for the big night by following these safety tips, ensuring a night of memories and fun without tears or worry.
Costume Safety
- Make sure your child tries on their costume before they head down the trick-or-treat path. Does it fit them well, or are they one step away from a tripping nightmare?
- Are they accessorizing with a wig, mask, or hat? If so, make sure they can see clearly and their vision is not obstructed.
- Search for bright, identifiable colors on your child’s costume that can be noticed in the dark. Add a flashlight or glow stick to the look for proper safety and practicality.
- Check the weather before heading out. Will it be chilly or is there a chance of rain? Ensure your child is prepped with necessary items like a coat or umbrella.
While Trick-or-Treating
- Make sure your child is with a trusted group, and if they are young, with an adult at all times.
- If a house is not illuminated, it is best to keep walking. Be polite and attentive by remaining on the porch when trick-or-treating.
- Always stick to streets that are well-lit and opt for walking on sidewalks.
- Keep an observant eye out for drivers or bikers when crossing the street.
- Establish a plan beforehand on a safe route to take that evening. Everyone will be on the same page, and the chance of getting lost is reduced.
At Your Home
- Clear out your driveway, yard, and porch of any items that might be hazardous.
- Stay well-lit! If you’re expecting little visitors, make sure your house is inviting and your lights are turned on.
- Keep your pets contained so they don’t startle trick-or-treaters.
- Double check your Halloween candy–are there any allergens to take note of, choking hazards, or expired candy?
