I don’t know about you, but my social media feed has been flooded with clips from the New York City Marathon this past weekend. Even though I’m not much of a runner, watching others cross that finish line always sparks the same thought–maybe I should give it a try.
With the new year right around the corner, setting a goal to get moving, whether that’s running, walking, or just spending more time outdoors, is a great way to start the year. New Orleans offers plenty of spots that make great routes, whether for running, walking, biking, or simply soaking up the city’s charm.
Here are five local routes you can take advantage of:
- Lakefront – A beautiful path along the water, starting at Lakeshore Park and continuing toward Paris Avenue makes a scenic, relaxing view of Lake Pontchartrain!
- Audubon Park – With a 1.8 mile long loop surrounding the golf course, this path is shaded by sprawling oak trees and a conveniently paved smooth finish.
- City Park – A local favorite for runners and walkers alike with winding paths and large green spaces!
- Lafitte Greenway – With nearly 2.6 miles of pavement, the multi-use trail connects Mid-City to the French Quarter and features unique New Orleans visuals.
- St. Charles Avenue Streetcar Line – The combo of historic homes and oak-line streets makes a classic NOLA route. Be sure to stay on the left track so you can see approaching streetcars and step aside safely.
A Few Safety Reminders
Wherever you go, stay aware of your surroundings, and stick to well-lit and populated areas. Bring a friend when possible, especially during early morning or evening hours.
Who knows, maybe when the next marathon comes around, you’ll be the one inspiring someone else to lace up their sneakers.
