Every family has a story. Sometimes neatly told in journals and letters, sometimes scattered in dusty shoeboxes and half-forgotten albums. On October 18, in honor of Family History Month, The Historic New Orleans Collection invites you to gather those threads and weave them into something lasting.

“Caring for Your Family Tree: Branching Out” is a day-long workshop designed to help you preserve, organize, and understand your family history, whether you’re just starting your genealogy journey or have years of research under your belt. Three engaging sessions, led by experts in genealogy and historical preservation, will guide you through the process.

Sessions:

  • Organizing Your Genealogical Research: Professional genealogist Marguerite Scully will show you how to tame the mountain of paperwork, create order from chaos, and spot gaps in your research so your family’s story unfolds more clearly.
  • I’ve Tested My DNA—Now What?: HNOC family historian Jari C. Honora will demystify DNA results, help you choose the right testing company, and explain how genetic information can unlock new chapters in your family history.
  • Dating and Caring for Your Family Photographs: Associate curator Mallory Taylor will share tips for organizing and storing treasured photos, plus tricks for dating images using everything from clothing styles to photographers’ marks.

This intimate, information-packed program runs from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Williams Research Center in the heart of the French Quarter. Space is limited, so mark your calendar, polish up your questions, and get ready to give your family’s past the care it deserves. Register today at hnoc.org
