For many children, summer camp is a rite of passage, a time for carefree play, new friendships, and memory-making adventures. But for families of children on the autism spectrum, finding a summer program that is both accessible and accommodating can be a daunting challenge. That’s where Camp Benny steps in, bringing a fresh burst of hope, inclusion, and joy to the New Orleans area.

Launched by the Beignet Fest Foundation in partnership with Kidcam Camp Programs, Camp Benny opened its doors on June 9 at the University of Holy Cross in Algiers. The inaugural camp season, already at capacity, marks a powerful step forward in serving neurodivergent youth in Greater New Orleans.

The statistics speak for themselves: One in every 31 children is diagnosed on the autism spectrum, and yet appropriate summer programming remains limited. Camp Benny was developed to meet that growing need, offering a sensory-friendly, social-skills-centered environment where kids can thrive, not just participate.

“Camp Benny is more than just a summer program,” says Darbi Philibert, Camp Benny’s director and a Certified Autism Specialist with nearly three decades of experience in occupational therapy. “It’s a place where every child can truly thrive. We’ve created an environment built on inclusivity, connection, and growth, ensuring that every camper feels valued, supported, and empowered to explore their strengths.”

The six-week program is split into two three-week sessions and features a high counselor-to-camper ratio, along with trained volunteers and “buddies” to support campers in real time. Activities are tailored to engage children on the spectrum in meaningful ways, fostering connection, communication, and confidence.

Parents also benefit from the peace of mind that Camp Benny provides. Knowing their children are in capable, compassionate hands allows them to maintain their work schedules and daily routines without the stress of inaccessible or inadequate care.

And crucially, the Beignet Fest Foundation is making sure cost is not a barrier. More than half of Camp Benny’s inaugural campers are attending with financial assistance, thanks to generous support from local businesses, community groups, and donors, including proceeds from the beloved annual Beignet Fest.

“What started as a dream when we first created the Beignet Fest Foundation, Camp Benny represents an exciting milestone,” says Beignet Fest Foundation Executive Director Sherwood Collins. “We have created a place for autistic children to play and socialize when school is out for the summer.”

With community partnerships, a strong foundation of support, and a clear vision, Camp Benny is poised to grow in the years to come. Though this year’s sessions are full, parents can join the notification list for future opportunities by emailing campbenny@beignetfest.com or visiting campbennynola.org.

As New Orleans families look forward to another Beignet Fest this November, they can do so with the sweet knowledge that their favorite treat now helps fund something even sweeter: acceptance, adventure, and belonging for every child.
