The iconic 18-inch historical dolls from American Girl first debuted in 1986, launching a beloved franchise that would go on to develop magazines, retail storefronts, books, films, and generations of fans. Now, 40 years later, the original American Girl doll characters—Felicity™, Addy™, Molly™, Kirsten™, Samantha™, and Josefina™—are being reimagined for a new era.
The Special Edition Modern Era™ Collection introduces these classic darlings in a smaller-scale (14.5-inch to be exact) frame, complete with updated clothing that blends the historical fashion of each doll’s identity with a modern twist. Mattel emphasizes that the redesign aims to honor the legacy of the characters while reinterpreting them for today’s children.
“This commemorative collection honors the characters that started it all and invites fans to fall in love with them again,” the brand shared on its official website.
With this rebrand, Mattel allegedly hopes to spark renewed interest among both collectors and a new generation of young customers—a fresh take while preserving the history of the iconic dolls.
The reimagined collection was unveiled on February 11 and is currently available for preorder, with shipments beginning May 1.
