A proposal in the Louisiana Legislature that could have officially recognized cheer, dance, and lacrosse as sanctioned high school sports won’t be moving forward this year.
House Concurrent Resolution 10 asked the Louisiana High School Athletic Association to bring these activities under its official oversight. While it made it out of the House Education Committee, it ultimately didn’t pass in a full House vote on April 13.
So what does that mean? For now, nothing changes.
Supporters of the resolution said it could have helped improve safety standards, especially in cheer, where athletes are often performing high-level stunts without consistent statewide guidelines.
If these activities were ever officially sanctioned, at least 80 schools would need to show interest in participating. Cheer and dance would likely hit that mark pretty quickly, while lacrosse may take a little longer as it continues to grow in Louisiana.
Even without the resolution, the LHSAA still has the ability to move forward with sanctioning these activities on its own—it just won’t have that extra push from lawmakers this session.
