Summer reading just got a lot more exciting (and a lot more affordable!) for families in New Orleans East. On Saturday, June 21, 2025, the Friends of the New Orleans Public Library are setting up shop at the East New Orleans Regional Library (5641 Read Blvd.) for a one-day used book sale packed with bargains, community spirit, and a cause that keeps on giving. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., readers of all ages can browse thousands of gently loved titles, most priced at $4 or less, with children’s books starting at just $2.

But this sale is more than a chance to score a few books for your beach bag; it’s a celebration of literacy, accessibility, and the enduring power of public libraries. Since 1957, Friends of the New Orleans Public Library has worked quietly but mightily behind the scenes, raising funds to support essential library services, including the much-loved Summer Fun & Reading Challenge.

Proceeds from this pop-up sale will go directly toward enhancing the very programs that keep kids engaged, learning, and off screens during the long summer months. And this year, they’re making it easier than ever to get involved. With cash, cards, and even Venmo accepted, it’s never been easier to support your local library while building your home collection.

“The best advice I can give you is to bring your own big tote bag,” says Executive Director Shannan Cvitanovic. “You’ll come for a few books for your kids, but will end up with a cookbook, a travel guide, a novel you had been meaning to read, and a few other things that you didn’t even know you needed. We can’t wait to see what books people take home.”

Best of all, this sale is coming to the heart of New Orleans East, a community that deserves and thrives on access to enriching, affordable, and educational events like this one. So, mark your calendar, support your local library, and prepare to leave with a bag full of stories, knowledge, and the satisfaction of knowing you helped keep our city’s literary light shining bright.
