In a move that promises to transform food access in underserved communities, Second Harvest Food Bank officially launched its 32-foot Makin’ Groceries Mobile Market on January 30, 2025, at the James C. Simmons Community Center in Westwego. The innovative grocery store on wheels will travel throughout Jefferson Parish’s District 3, delivering much-needed groceries to communities that have lacked a supermarket for years.
The energy at the launch event was palpable, as community leaders, volunteers, and residents gathered to witness a significant step in the fight against food insecurity. The initiative, a partnership between Second Harvest and Jefferson Parish Councilman Byron Lee, aims to fill a critical gap for families in Avondale, Kennedy Heights, and Waggaman, where access to fresh food has been a growing concern.
A Community-Driven Solution
The launch of the Makin’ Groceries Mobile Market marks a major milestone in the fight against food insecurity in South Louisiana. Addressing the issue goes beyond just providing food—it’s about tackling systemic barriers like food deserts and economic challenges that make access to fresh groceries difficult for many families.
The mobile market serves as a direct response to these challenges, providing essential groceries to communities with limited access to fresh food. Many of the products available are sourced from local farmers, further strengthening the community’s agricultural economy.
This initiative underscores the importance of long-term solutions that go beyond traditional food distribution efforts, helping families make healthier food choices. Unlike food giveaways, the mobile market operates as a full grocery store, offering fresh produce, proteins, dairy, and pantry staples—all at reasonable prices., offering fresh produce, proteins, dairy, and pantry staples at reasonable prices. The market accepts cash, credit, and EBT benefits, ensuring inclusivity for all residents.
Councilman Byron Lee, a driving force behind the project, also spoke passionately about the importance of this initiative. “As my mother used to say, if there’s a will, there’s a way,” he remarked, emphasizing the determination behind the project. He and his staff recognized the urgent need for food access in the community and began exploring possible solutions.
More Than Just Groceries
The mobile market is more than a source of food—it’s a hub for community engagement. In addition to groceries, shoppers will have access to vital health services, nutrition education, and other resources thanks to partnerships with CF Industries Foundation, AmeriHealth Caritas, and InclusivCare.
As the ribbon was cut and the first shoppers stepped inside the market, the impact of this initiative was immediately clear. Smiles, conversation, and a sense of relief filled the air as families browsed the fresh selections—goods that, until now, had been out of reach without long commutes or expensive alternatives.
A Model for the Future
With the Makin’ Groceries Mobile Market now in motion, Second Harvest and its partners hope to expand this model to other areas struggling with food insecurity. For families who have spent years navigating the challenges of a food desert, today marked a new beginning—one in which fresh, healthy food is no longer a luxury, but a right. As the Makin’ Groceries Mobile Market sets out on its mission, it carries with it more than just food; it carries hope.
