Ghouls, goblins, and witches will soon be running “amok, amok, amok – ugh!” on Halloween, but do you know what else is scary? — letting your kids stay home alone for the first time.

Parenthood is a constant montage of firsts, but once the honeymoon of baby’s first words spoken and steps taken is over, the real fun can begin — and by fun, I mean scary. How old should kids be before they’re allowed to babysit, walk to a friend’s house alone, or cook? These are the kinds of firsts that are often overshadowed by the early years’ firsts and can creep up like a toddler standing over their sleeping parents’ bed just waiting for mom or dad to open their eyes.
