5 Read-Alouds to Exercise Kids’ Minds

April 4, 2020

Too busy to read a book to your little one during the at-home work day? No worries, here are five virtual read-alouds that make sure your kids won’t miss out on story time.

First Lady Donna Edwards

Launched in March, Louisiana’s First Lady, Donna Edwards, hosts live-streamed readings of children’s books by Louisiana authors at 11 am Tuesdays and Thursdays via her Facebook page. Edwards also offers comforting advice to both children and parents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

New Orleans Public Libraries

The NOLALibrary YouTube channel offers a collection of read-alouds called Virtual Storytime.  Your kids will be treated to its theme of “Movement & Dancing,” meaning that both their minds and bodies will get exercised.

Julia Cook-Facebook Live

Bestselling children’s author Julia Cook announced she’ll be doing readings and offer a fun lesson for each book.

Oprah Winfrey & David Harbour

Storytime Online got Oprah Winfrey and “Stranger Things” actor David Harbour to host their own a read-alouds. Winfrey takes on Thelma Godin’s “Hula Hoopin’ Queen” and Harbour tackles Julie Falatko’s “Snappsy the Alligator.” Both sessions offer a teacher’s guide for second and third graders.

Oliver Jeffers

Author of “The Day the Crayons Quit” Oliver Jeffers will be reading one book a day on Instagram Live at 1 pm. If you can’t make it, no worries. He’ll post them all on his website
