Hollygrove Market: Keep Doors Open Today, Build for Tomorrow

Hollygrove Market & Farm is a community-owned (wholly owned by a nonprofit, community development corporation), urban micro-farm, local food hub, and grocery store located in the heart of New Orleans. They sell produce and other food products, all purchased from local sources – urban growers, small, rural, family-owned farms and some grown on their farm that surrounds the market! They provide community garden space, train urban growers, conduct sustainable living workshops, accept compost and material for recycling from the community, and conduct tours for children and adults.

Here’s the challenge:

Despite being open for 9 years, Hollygrove Market survives week to week. They are funded almost entirely by market sales. Their profit margins are thin and they pay a fair wage to their employees and fair market value to farmers. The disruption caused by Hurricane Nate affected Hollygrove greatly. The weekends bring in 75% of income. Closing part of the weekend, loss of perishable products, and other expenses incurred will bring total weekend losses to over $5,000.

And here’s the plan:

The grounds and building renovation project, in partnership with Rebuilding Together New Orleans, will allow the Market to generate another stream of revenue by hosting community meetings, outdoor special events, educational workshops, and possibly renting office space to local nonprofits and businesses.

The first phase of the renovation, coordinated by Rebuilding Together, has been supported financially and with volunteer labor by a partnership with Shell and the Junior League of New Orleans. However, finishing the first phase will cost us approximately $5,000.

Completing this renovation will help to ensure that Hollygrove Market stays open to serve the community.

They need you. Right now.

Hollygrove needs $10,000 to survive the weekend and keep on the path for the building project. Their mission is to increase accessibility of fresh, nutritious, locally-sourced food to Hollygrove residents, surrounding underserved neighborhoods. With your help they can continue.
