First Day Of School Tips

We’ve created an easy list of tips to make your child’s first school experience a great one. Here are some tips on helping with the transition, along with a list of must have supplies!

Tips for making the transition to preschool go smoothly

-Visit the school/classroom in advance. Some schools have open houses or play days prior to the first day; if your child’s doesn’t, call to schedule an appointment to meet the teacher and look around.

-1-2 weeks before school begins, start talking about what your child might do there. Read related books books

– If possible, get a list of classmates and arrange a playdate before the beginning of school. Even the beginning of the school year is not too late to make a difference!

-Remind your child that the teacher will go over rules and routines and your child can always ask if she forgets anything.

-Prepare to send your child in comfortable clothing and shoes. Consider self-help ability when choosing outfits.

-If you’re worried about separation issue, ask the school if your child can bring a “lovey” or a picture from home.

-Let your child’s teacher know of any triggers or unusual habits your child may have. If you child always chews her hair when she is anxious, this is good for her teacher to be aware of!

Must-have supplies for preschool

-A backpack, sized appropriately for your child.

-Luggage tag or label with your contact information, placed inside of backpack.

-Lunch box. Make sure it’s not too big or heavy, and that it’s well-insulated!

-Box of tissues for the classroom, and personal-sized packs or wet wipes for your child’s backpack.

-Soft blanket or nap pad for nap-time. Check with school if nap pads are allowed instead.

-Clean change of clothes (swap out as the seasons change) in case of any accidents. Put your child’s name on them, and put them in a ziplock with their name on the outside, as well.
